Several factors go into a price we prepare for you and they may be confusing. Here are some general Frequently Asked Questions about printing (and some definitions):
Q. What kind of paper stock should I choose?
| A. |
Your choice depends on the product needed. Below are some brief descriptions and uses for different types of paper:
'20 pound' -- Basic plain paper, 'copy paper': White 20# is the least expensive paper and is good enough for most inter-office forms, note pads, fax sheets, etc.-- whatever doesn't require a special look. 20# paper comes in a variety of colors. Using 20# colored paper is also an inexpensive way to produce flyers.
'24 pound': Slightly thicker paper used for various purposes such as letterheads, envelopes, newsletters, and bank forms. 24# is recommended for jobs that require front and back printing.
Card Stock: Used for business cards, postcards, manual covers, etc.
Carbonless Paper: Used for invoices, work tickets, packing slips, and any other office form that requires more than one copy. Two or more sheets are combined in a set. Writing on the top copy transfers the image to the attached sheets underneath. Much handier than the old sheets of carbon once used. The terms used here are '2-part' for a white with a canary copy, '3-part' for white, canary, and pink-- and so on.
Fine Papers: Used for letterheads, envelopes, and business cards. These more expensive papers provide a very professional look for your company. Some examples include 'linen finish' paper which has a cloth-like texture, 'laid-finish' paper which has small ridged lines, and '25% cotton' paper--made from cotton fibers for a rich look and feel. Many color choices are available with these papers.
There are many other varieties of paper too numerous to list here. They range from enamel coated paper for a glossy image to no-tear polyester sheets for use on pallets of goods. If you know of a special stock you need, just ask.
Q. What colors of ink can I use?
| A. |
The most inexpensive way to go is in black ink, which is fine for all applications. But if you prefer to use a colored ink our standard colors are Blue, Red, Teal, Process (light) Blue, Maroon, and Green. Special Colors of ink include Magnetic Ink (used on bank forms and checks) and PMS (Pantone® Matching System) inks. A PMS ink is used when a exact color match is required, and is designated by a number (such as 'PMS259' for a certain color of purple). These special inks are more expensive, but may be necessary for what you need.
Q. How many colors of ink can I use?
| A. |
You can use as many colors as you like. However, when you have 2 or more colors of ink there are various factors that effect your price. Naturally the more colors you chose the more your product will cost. Black ink is considered a color when printing 2 or more inks. Close registration is a term used when printing two or more colors in close proximity to each other, such as touching colors or falling within 1/16" of each other. This requires a little extra work for the printer and will also effect your cost. Another factor used in figuring your price is using non standard ink combinations or PMS inks.
Q. What is '4-color process' printing?
| A. |
This is how full color printing, such as a photograph, is produced. The colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black are combined in different amounts to produce any color. This can be done on a full-color copier for smaller quantities or on a press for larger ones. We often make Full-Color business cards for customers such as real-estate agents and for other customers requiring photographs.
Q. What is a 'bleed'?
| A. |
Printers require a certain amount of unprinted space (usually 1/4 inch) around the edges of sheet. Most computer printers or photocopiers work in the same way. When printing must go outside this area it is known as a 'bleed'. This is a little more expensive to produce because a larger sheet of paper stock must be used and then cut after printing.
Q. What is 'typesetting'?
| A. |
This is how the type and the layout of your printing is produced on a computer. Simple typesetting such as most business cards, letterheads and envelopes is done at no charge to you.
Q. What is a 'proof'?
| A. |
This is the process of checking typeset copy for content and positioning, to ensure you are getting what you want before going to the press. We will send you a proof by fax (or snail mail if you prefer). We do require you look over the proof and return with your signature showing approval.
Q. You quoted me a price of 500 business cards for $22.00, but 1000 is only $26.00.. Why??
| A. |
The major cost in any printing job is in the set-up and producing the first piece, after that it is just a little more time and paper involved.
